Allow us to explain:

Imagine working at a mining camp, where you’re inevitably near hundreds of other people. In the scenario that you are notified of a potential exposure to the virus, you would be required to self-isolate for 14 days and get tested if symptoms present themselves.

Your employer covers the costs of providing safe accommodations and adequate food for your time in isolation, and unless you’re able to get tested and generate a negative result, you must complete a full 14-day isolation period.

Here’s the problem: The Public Health System does not allow for tests for asymptomatic individuals, which means that although you may not be COVID-positive, you are still unable to return to work for at least the duration of the isolation period.

Now let’s imagine this type of scenario but for a large number of employees… Not only is a company paying for accommodation and food for all affected staff, but now the company also has a large number of people who are no longer contributing to their workforce. The combination of increased expenses with significant lost revenue can have a detrimental effect on the company, and the economy as a whole.

The Public Health System has specific and necessary criteria for who can get a COVID test to ensure the stability of the system. The current criteria do not allow individuals with no symptoms to access a COVID test, forcing individuals who may have been exposed to the virus, but are asymptomatic, into self-isolation.
